Many hobby goat farmers do not only see milking as a daily chore but they also see it as a time to learn more about each animal. It is a time to check their health and observe & learn their peculiar traits while connecting with each of them.

All goat farmers have different opinions and preferences when it comes to milking procedures of their animals. Many milking routines depend on the size of your goat herd, the farm layout, and the goat’s breed. Milking by hand can be very tiring and time-consuming especially if you have large herds of goats.

Our milking machines are great alternatives for milking your goats. A milking machine works rhythmically with its combination of different parts that help create a vacuum that extracts milk from the goat, cow and sheep teat; it alternates with the air causing the milk to flow directly into a safe container. One good reason to use a milking machine is that it prevents the milk from being contaminated.

How To Use A Milking Machine For Goats

  1. Turn on the milking machine and cross-check that a vacuum is created in each of the attachments before fixing the inflation.

Note: Wrong vacuum attachment might lead to mastitis. Listen for a hissing sound with the cluster vacuum turned. If the hissing noise reduces that means it is working effectively.

  1. Bring the goats to the stand and feed them with some grains/hay.
  2. Make sure you wash your hands properly.
  3. Go ahead to hand milk two squirts from each teat into the container. This will enable you to check for any form of contamination or abnormalities.
  4. Clean and sanitize the goat’s teat and udder with soap and warm water.
  5. Ensure you dry the teats and udder with a clean towel. Note: Never milk a wet udder. In doing so, the teats can be irritated and might lead to mastitis.
  6. Position the machine cups on the goat’s udder and turn on the vacuum.
  7. Once you set the machine properly, milk will begin to flow freely from the tubing straight to the sanitized container.
  8. The moment you notice that the large amount of milk entering the container has reduced, go ahead and turn off the milking machine.
  9. Go ahead to hand milk the last milk. This prevents decreased milk production and disease contamination.
  10. Sanitize the teats after milking with a good sanitiser; you can use a derma sept teat dip. If you are using a spray sanitiser, ensure you coat each teat end thoroughly.

If you are making use of dip cups, make sure you use a clean one for each goat. This help prevents cross-contamination.

  1. After all these processes, return your goat to the shed. Make available fresh water and fresh alfalfa/ hay for the goat immediately after milking. Ensure she drinks enough water, eats, and rests while the orifice seals gradually.
